Skardu is the gateway to some of the highest mountains on Earth — K2, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum are all reachable from here — but you don't need to be a mountaineer to enjoy it. Cold deserts, glacial lakes and Balti culture make it worth visiting on its own terms.
Getting There
Flights from Islamabad to Skardu are the fastest option (around 1 hour, when weather permits — cancellations are common, so build in buffer days) and offer some of the best in-flight mountain views anywhere in the world on a clear day. The road route via the Karakoram Highway takes roughly 18–24 hours and is an adventure in its own right.
Top Things to Do
- Skardu Fort (Kharpocho) — a short, steep climb for panoramic views over the Indus River.
- Shangrila Resort & Lake — the "Heaven on Earth" lake just outside town.
- Upper and Lower Kachura Lakes — two of the most photographed lakes in the region.
- Shigar Valley — a quieter side trip with Shigar Fort and apricot orchards.
- Deosai National Park — a high-altitude plateau famous for wildflowers and the Himalayan brown bear, open roughly June to September.
How Many Days Do You Need?
A minimum of 4–5 days lets you see Skardu city, the nearby lakes, and either Shigar Valley or a Deosai day trip. Add 2–3 more days if you want to continue to Khaplu or attempt the Deosai-to-Astore crossing.
Practical Notes
ATMs exist in Skardu city but can run out of cash during peak season — bring a backup. Mobile network coverage is reasonable in town but drops off quickly outside it, including at Deosai and most lakes.
