Murree is Pakistan's most accessible hill station, just a couple of hours from Islamabad, which makes it enormously popular in winter when snowfall transforms Mall Road into one of the most-photographed streets in the country. It also means you should plan carefully, because popularity has consequences.
When Does It Snow?
Snowfall typically starts in late December and continues through February, though exact timing varies year to year. Weekends after a fresh snowfall see the heaviest crowds and the worst traffic — if you can visit on a weekday, you will have a much easier time.
Traffic Is the Real Challenge
During heavy snow, the road from Islamabad to Murree can back up for hours, and the town itself restricts vehicle entry when it gets too congested. Starting early in the morning and checking weather/traffic advisories before you leave will save you from spending your trip sitting in a car.
What to Do Beyond Mall Road
- Patriata (New Murree) chairlift — cable car and chairlift rides with valley views.
- Nathiagali — a quieter, less-crowded pine-forest alternative about an hour further.
- Kashmir Point and Pindi Point — viewpoints just outside the main bazaar.
What to Pack
Proper waterproof boots matter more than a heavy jacket — most visitors underestimate how wet and slushy the streets get. Layers work better than one thick coat, since hotel rooms are usually well-heated even when it is freezing outside.
